“At a time when cinemas are struggling to stay afloat amidst the streaming wars, Movie Movie in Hongkong has bucked the trend by engaging in an upmarket overhaul. The reception is spacious and well appointed, with service staff to help those among us who are less tech-savvy with ticket purchases. Farther inside, a network of curved passages lit with warm lighting and framed by ceiling and wall installations exude an ambience of lush luxury for red carpet events. The approach to the cinema halls is cozy, aided by narrowing spaces that seem to hug the moviegoer. But once inside, the halls open up again. Sturdy seats, judiciously cushioned for comfort and healthy posture, posses ample bum- and legroom to offer a sense of personal space - something that may be hard to find in most public places in Hongkong. My friends and I watched the local animated feature 世外 there and the two hours sauntered by without any discomfort to body, eyes or ears. It’s a testament to doing right by the film industry and I hope this rejuvenates people’s motivation to watch movies again. Obviously, this cannot compete on the price point that streaming services provide but some films just don’t do well at home, no matter how well-equpped your space and system might be. Kudos to Movie Movie and their foray into a new age of moviegoing.”
