1 / 5Law Uk Folk Museum
đ Chai Wan, Hong Kong Island
Hong Kong's last surviving Hakka village house, built in the early 18th century by the Law family and restored in 1989. Five indoor rooms. Free entry. Closed Thursdays. Wheelchair ramps installed.
A little gem in the middle of the busy city. Close your eyes and you can imagine the house and land around. The leaflet is full of information and the notice boards have old photos of years gone by.
đ Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 5 and above who are studying Hong Kong history or want a free cultural stop. The small scale keeps attention spans intact. Combine with other Chai Wan attractions to justify the MTR journey â the museum alone is a short visit and closes on Thursdays.

âPleasant showcase of a centuries old traditional Hakka house within a small park. Conveniently located near the Chai Wan MTR stationâ

âNice little museum located in Chai Wan. Law Uk was a typical Hakka-style house in the Law Uk Village that was built at the beginning of the 18th century by the Law family. During the 1950s, Chai Wan began to develop and Law Uk Village was torn down, leaving just one house behind. In 1989, the Hong Kong Government took possession of the house and renamed it Law Uk Folk Museum. The house contains a large living room in the center; on the right and left are rooms and mezzanines. In front of the living room are two small rooms used as the kitchen and a storage room. Outside, there is an empty space used as a thrashing ground. Inside, It was decorated with traditional Hakka furniture and other household items.â

âNice place to stop by if you're already in the area but maybe not worth traveling for when visiting on its own. It's just a small museum but gives you a glimpse of culture of how and where Hakka people used to live in the old days.â

Overview
Law Uk Folk Museum preserves the sole remaining structure of Law Uk Village â a Hakka-style house built in the early 1700s and donated to the government when Chai Wan was developed in the 1950s. Five restored rooms show how Hakka families organised domestic and working life. Printed leaflets provide detailed historical context; information boards carry archival photographs. The museum sits within a small park, five minutes on foot from Chai Wan MTR. Wheelchair ramps circle the building.
