1 / 3Heritage of Mei Ho House
📍 Pak Tin, Kowloon
Free heritage museum in Pak Tin's Mei Ho House — Hong Kong's original public housing block built in the 1950s. Preserved rooms include original kitchens, iron grille windows, and narrow corridors. Guided tours in Cantonese, English, and Mandarin.
Educational and entertaining museum dedicated to the first communal residential living project in HK. I enjoyed my visit very much and learned a lot. The exhibits incorporate the stories of "Mei Ho Alumni" (people who lived in these rooms) which makes them more personal and allows for deeper understanding of the atmosphere at the time. I highly recommend this museum to anyone visiting the area.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for children aged 5+ with parents who want to put Hong Kong's urban history into human terms. The preserved rooms are visceral rather than abstract — children who have lived in apartment blocks connect immediately to the cramped scale. Allow one hour. Free entry makes it a low-commitment addition to a Pak Tin or Shek Kip Mei visit.

“A must visit in Hong Kong! Touching stories and exhibits demonstrating local perseverance. Some of the living conditions are still common today which only makes a deeper connection with information at hand. Very valuable history museum”

“Very nice museum that was not crowded at all. A lot of information was provided on the exhibits. Would probably take an hour to slowly go through the museum. Free admission.”

“HK history. Free entry. One of the first public housing blocks in HK working class area. Now this 1 block has been converted into museum on part of the ground floor and 1st floor and youth hostel. Can see how people use to live in the first public housing in HK. Well presented. Not very popular, so you can have a leisurely visit with minimal noise”

Overview
Mei Ho House was completed in 1954 as part of Hong Kong's first public housing estate. The museum preserves original rooms on the ground and first floors — visitors walk through narrow corridors, past iron grille windows, into vintage kitchens and shower rooms that retain their original layout. Exhibits incorporate personal testimonies from former residents, grounding the history in individual experience. The building is also a functioning youth hostel.
